BRONX, N.Y. - St. John's cross country star Izzi Batt-Doyle finished up her memorable sophomore campaign in championship fashion as the sophomore from Adelaide, Australia captured an individual title at the 2015 ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday.
"St. John's had a terrific day at historic Van Cortlandt Park as Izzi Batt-Doyle ran a well executed race to win the individual title," said Head Coach Jim Hurt.
Batt-Doyle took home the individual title after running a personal-best 18:03.3 on the traditional Van Cortlandt Park 5K course. The sophomore standout averaged 5:48 per mile on the course and came in eight seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Hannah Jeter of Holy Cross. Batt-Doyle is just one week removed from one of the best performances of her career, a 30th-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
This is the third time a St. John's cross country runner has won the individual title at the ECAC Championships. Batt-Doyle joins Siobhan Murphy and Erin Hayes as the only three Red Storm runners to accomplish this feat.
Senior Stephanie Van Pelt closed out her Red Storm cross country career with an All-EAST performance as she finished 15h overall in a time of 18:54.3 for 5K. S. Van Pelt improves eight spots from her 23rd-place finish at the 2014 ECAC Championships. Following closely behind both Batt-Doyle and S. Van Pelt, was standout freshman Antonia Howard. The Sydney, Australia native has finished top-three for the Red Storm in every race this season and did so again on Saturday by placing 24th with a personal-best time of 19:07.6.
Senior Tiffany Evanego was the fourth St. John's runner to cross the finish line, as she finished in a new personal-best time of 20:35.6 for 104th overall, while sophomore Melissa Hidalgo rounded out the scoring effort for the Red Storm by taking home 113th overall in a new personal-best time of 20:51.8. Michelle Van Pelt crossed next for the Red Storm, in a time of 21:14.2 for 124th and freshman Shannon Page rounded out the performance by taking 147th in a new personal-best time of 22:26.7.
"Stephanie Van Pelt also garnered All-EAST honors and our team continued to show great improvement. Our season concluded on a high note and I want to thank our seniors for all of their great leadership throughout the campaign," said Hurt.
St. John's finished ninth out of 17 teams on Saturday, as the Red Storm posted an average race time of 19:30.52 and finished with 224 team points. Five different Red Storm runners posted new personal-best times for 5K and St. John's bested BIG EAST rival Seton Hall, who finished 15th.
The St. John's Track & Field team looks to build upon the momentum of this cross country season as they are set to begin competing in early December.
