QUEENS, N.Y. - After earning a slew of national honors following the conclusion of the 2015 season, Rachel Daly has received yet another accolade, being named as one of the four nominees for the Honda Sport Award, it was announced today.
Daly, a senior forward from Harrogate, England, joins just three other NCAA women's soccer players on the list of nominees for the prestigious award. Kadeisha Buchanan of West Virginia, Raquel Rodriguez of Penn State and Emily Sonnett of Virginia are also on the final ballot for the national honor.
The cohort with which Daly is associated with for this honor is particularly impressive. Both Buchanan and Rodriguez, the latter of whom is coming off a national championship with Penn State, started in this past summer's World Cup for Canada and Costa Rica, respectively. Sonnett has earned caps with the United States Senior Women's National Team, most recently in the team's Victory Tour that concluded on Wednesday. These three players are also the finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the Collegiate Women's Sports Awards for the past 40 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies the best of the best in collegiate athletics.
Daly garners the recognition after turning in the most prolific career in the history of St. John's Women's Soccer. As a senior, Daly led the BIG EAST and ranked third in the NCAA in scoring with 19 goals, putting the cap on a St. John's tenure that saw her break program career records for goals (50) and points (111) despite playing just three seasons in Queens. Under her leadership in 2015, the Red Storm broke the school's single-season wins record (15) and claimed the program's first-ever BIG EAST Regular Season title with a 7-1-1 showing in league play. The Red Storm also reached the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history.
Daly has solidified her spot as the most decorated individual in St. John's Women's Soccer history this season, being named an NSCAA First Team All-American, an NSCAA Scholar All-American, a CoSIDA Academic All-American, the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist.
