QUEENS, N.Y. - With four races in three days, freshman Maya Stephens showed grit and toughness throughout the weekend, which culminated with an eighth-place finish Sunday in the 200-meter final at the Canadian Junior Track & Field Championships in Edmonton.
"We are very proud of Maya's performance at the Canadian Junior Championships and look forward to her competing for the Canadian Junior National team at the Pan American Junior Championships later this month," said St. John's head coach Jim Hurt. "Maya has had an exceptional year and to make both the 100-meter and 200-meter finals at her national championships is a great accomplishment. We appreciate all of her hard work in reaching such a high level of competition."
Stephens, who entered the final with the third-fastest seeded time, ran out of lane six against a strong field and finished with a time of 25.15 seconds. Stephen's club teammate, Leya Buchanan, won the final in a time of 23.77. Buchanan also won the 100-meter dash (11.57) just ahead of Stephens.
Stephens qualified in the 100-meters Friday after placing second behind Buchanan with a blistering time of 11.59 seconds, which ties for the third-fastest time in program history. Phobay Kutu-Akoi holds the school-record at 11.52, followed by Shernette Hyatt-Davis time of 11.55. Stephens is tied with Rikka Lovely for third at 11.59.
