QUEENS, N.Y. - Reliever Thomas Hackimer has been selected as one of 30 baseball candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, an honor bestowed upon an NCAA Division I senior with notable achievements in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as community leaders.
The 2015-16 BIG EAST Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and winner of the BIG EAST Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete Award, Hackimer has a 3.62 GPA as a physics major. The reliever, a three-time Academic All-BIG EAST selection and a first team Capital One Academic All-District honoree last season, has helped the baseball program win a pair of BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards (2012-13, 2014-15).
A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society, Hackimer has served as a team representative for both the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Student Development 101 since 2012. The senior has also been involved with various community service initiatives, including the League of Yes, St. John's the Baptist Church, St. Nicholas Men's Shelter, Relay for Life and the Autism Fun Run.
Drafted by the Mets in the 15th round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Hackimer returned for his senior season and leads all active Division I pitchers in appearances (102) and ranks tied for first in saves (30). The reliever holds program-records for single-season saves (15) and single-season appearances (35), and already owns program-records for both career-saves and career-appearances. In his career, Hackimer has gone 9-2 with a 2.68 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 121.0 innings of work.
Hackimer opened his senior season as both the Preseason BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree. The reliever also earned Preseason All-America honors from both Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, and was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List.
A second team ABCA All-American last season, Hackimer also earned first team ABCA All-Northeast Region accolades and unanimous first team All-BIG EAST honors after going 4-1 with 15 saves and a 1.92 ERA.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. Those finalists will be placed on the official ballot, which will be distributed to media, coaches and fans through a nationwide voting system. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the College World Series.
