More Than 200 St. John's Student-Athletes Named to BIG EAST All-Academic Team

QUEENS, N.Y. - Speaking to the standout nature of the St. John's student-athlete both on the field of competition and in the classroom, the BIG EAST announced today that a record 203 members of the Red Storm have been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
The St. John's athletic department shattered its previously-held record for the most honorees in a single academic year, surpassing 2015's mark of 182 student-athletes.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 10 member and seven affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee. There are 2,333 honorees for the 2015-16 academic year, the most in the three years since conference realignment. The BIG EAST honored 2,091 in 2013-14 and 2,197 in 2014-15. Villanova led all schools with 302 student-athletes recognized, edging Georgetown (288) which had led the league the last two years.
Leading the way for the Red Storm was the women's tennis team, which had all nine of its players honored for their dedication to academic excellence. Next up was Ian Stone's women's soccer squad, which had 96 percent of its eligible athletes garner the accolade. Volleyball, baseball, men's tennis and women's golf all saw at least 80 percent of their student-athletes eclipse the 3.0 plateau, while men's golf, men's soccer, softball, track & field and lacrosse each had more than 70 percent of their student-athletes earn recognition from the conference.
