QUEENS, N.Y. - After sweeping Maine in its first home series of the season, the No. 5 St. John's Red Storm saw two of its players earn recognition from the conference on Tuesday morning, as Sean Mooney was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and Jamie Galazin found a spot on the league's Weekly Honor Roll.
Mooney, a freshman who has made just three career starts, claimed his second-straight BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week accolade after tossing one of the dominant games in recent memory for a Red Storm hurler. The rookie from Marmora, N.J., registered the program's first complete game shutout since Ryan McCormick against Xavier on May 9, 2015, surrendering only four hits and no walks while striking out three. The right hander lowered his ERA to 0.88 on the season, the 13th-best mark in the nation, and reduced his WHIP to a miniscule 0.62, good enough for second in all of the NCAA.
Galazin recorded three multi-hit games in four tries this past week, hitting .643 with a .648 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. The junior center fielder kicked off the week with a 4-for-5, two-RBI outing against Saint Peter's, hitting the first of two triples on the week. In a Saturday doubleheader against Maine, Galazin registered a pair of two-hit efforts, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the first tilt before belting a bases-loaded triple in game number two, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. In the series finale on Sunday, the Langhorne, Pa., native went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. In addition to his success at the dish, Galazin also swiped two bases, bumping his team-leading total in that category to eight on the season.
St. John's, who obtained its highest ranking since 1980 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll on Monday, returns to action at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, facing off against Wagner at 3 p.m.
