QUEENS, N.Y. - After splitting a pair of decisions at Belson Stadium last weekend, the St. John's women's soccer team is back on the road this week to take on Boston College in Newton, Mass. The Johnnies and Eagles are scheduled for a 7 p.m. first kick from Newton Campus Lacrosse & Soccer Field on ACC Network Extra, available on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN App.
The Red Storm enters Thursday's contest with an overall record of 4-2-1 following a win over Loyola and a loss to Lehigh last weekend.
With the game tied at one late in regulation, senior defender Mikhaila Martinov flicked a loose ball past the keeper to give the Johnnies a 2-1 win over the Greyhounds. Earlier, junior Samie Scaffidi sent a shot into the upper-90 of the right post and crossbar to level the score at one. Both Martinov and Scaffidi found the back of the net for the first time this season against Loyola.
Sunday featured the Red Storm's first penalty kick of the 2017 campaign. In the 28th minute, junior Christina Bellero stepped to the spot, but her try was stopped. Luckily, fellow junior Lucy Whipp was there to send in the rebound for her first tally of the season. Through seven games this year, eight different players have scored for the Red Storm with Bellero leading the way with four goals. Entering play on Thursday, the Red Storm ranks fourth in the BIG EAST with 11 total goals and 1.57 goals per game.
Boston College enters Thursday's contest with an overall record of 5-3-0 following a 3-0 victory over Boston University in its last outing. Keeper Alexis Bryant made all six of her saves in the second half to post her second shutout this season. The Eagles have been scoring in bunches early in 2017, recording three or more goals in four of their first eight games, including a 5-1 win over Colgate and a pair of 3-0 victories over Stony Brook and BU.
Boston College returns five starters from last season including Allyson Swaby, Lauren Berman, Alexis Bryant and Madison Kenny. The Eagles were picked to finish 10th out of 14 teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
Meeting for the first time since 2015, St. John's and Boston College have a series history that dates back to 1989. The Johnnies and Eagles have met 18 times in the all-time series with Boston College holding a 12-5-1 advantage over its former BIG EAST rival. Despite the Eagles leading in the series history, the Red Storm has won three of the last five meetings between the two programs. In 2015, then-freshman Christina Bellero scored the game-winner just 25 seconds into overtime to give the Johnnies a 2-1 victory.
Following Thursday's match at Boston College, the Red Storm returns to Belson Stadium for its final non-conference match of the 2017 season. The Johnnies will play host to Long Beach State on Sunday, Sept. 17 with first kick set for noon. Sunday's contest will be carried live on ESPN3.
