NEWTON, Mass. - Playing on the road for the last time before BIG EAST action opens next week, the St. John's women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision at Boston College on Thursday night.
The Eagles (6-3-0) converted the game's lone goal in the 84th minute when Lauren Berman sent in a loose ball off an assist from Elysa Virella. The tally was Berman's fifth of the season.
For the second time this year, the Red Storm (4-3-1) was forced to wait out a weather delay as the first kick between the Johnnies and Eagles (6-3-0) was pushed back 90 minutes due to heavy rain and lightning.
The Eagles outshot St. John's, 13-7, and sent five tries on target. Freshman goalkeeper Antonia Tammaro, who played her high school soccer just 35 miles from Boston College's campus, made four saves in her second career start.
Juniors Madeline McCracken and Christina Bellero led the team with two shots apiece. Both players sent one of their two shots on target, while Samie Scaffidi, Maia Cabrera and Mariela Jacome accounted for the other three Red Storm attempts.
Additionally, the Eagles earned 10 corner kicks after entering the game as the nation's leader in corner kicks per game at 9.63 per contest.
Tammaro was tested early as the Eagles sent their first shot on goal in just the second minute. Five minutes later, Boston College earned its first corner kick, but the Johnnies were able to clear the pressure.
McCracken registered the first shot of the night for St. John's in the 27th minute, sending her attempt wide of the cage. Later, in the 34th minute, Bellero sent a shot on goal that Alexis Bryant stopped for one of her four saves for the match.
In the 41st minute, Zsani Kajan entered the contest looking to make an impact. Just seconds into her appearance, the redshirt freshman got open in the middle of the field but a pass was too strong as Kajan pressured the Boston College back line. Then, in the 42nd minute, McCracken flicked a shot on goal that took a bounce away from Bryant, but the Eagles' keeper was able to recover to keep the game scoreless that that point.
Both sides took four shots in the opening 45 minutes. Boston College won four corner kicks, all of which were handled by the St. John's back line of Alexa Dolgos, Jesse Schaefer, Mikhaila Martinov and Christine McBeath.
Both teams stepped up the pressure early in the second half as the Eagles sent a shot wide in the 47th minute before Jacome saw a shot go wide in the 50th minute. Then, Boston College earned a pair of corners in the 51st minute, but the St. John's defense held strong.
In the 61st minute, the Johnnies had one of the better scoring opportunities. After a ball was sent into the box, Bellero connected on a header that just missed wide.
Later in the second half, the Eagles sent a shot wide in the 71st minute before sending another attempt high in the 74th minute. Following some substitutions, Tammaro made saves in the 80th and 82nd minutes to keep the Eagles off the board.
Then, in the 84th minute, Boston College broke through for the go-ahead goal and subsequently ran out the clock to preserve the win.
St. John's returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 17 when the Johnnies host Long Beach State in their final non-conference match of the season. First kick is scheduled for noon on ESPN3.
