The Red Storm claimed victories in 26 of their 30 total matches over the weekend.
The St. John's men's tennis team continued their stellar play over the weekend in West Point, N.Y., claiming 26 wins out of their 30 total matches over the weekend. Collectively, the Johnnies finished with a 16-2 record in singles play and 10-2 in doubles matches.
The Army West Point Shootout proved to be a commendable test for the Red Storm as they competed against eight teams from the Northeast region: Army West Point, Sacred Heart, UConn, St. Bonaventure, Marist, NJIT, and Monmouth.
Senior Dusan Vukicevic and sophomore Igor Maslov took the victory in all three of their singles matches over the weekend. Vukicevic won all three of his singles matches in straight-sets, defeating NJIT's Abdullah Fouad Lucca (6-0. 6-3), Army's David Gorshein (6-3, 6-1), and UConn's Hank Hill (6-4, 6-3).
Maslov would need three sets to win his first two singles matches of the weekend over NJIT's Javier Allende (1-6, 6-3, 10-6) and Army's Anant Mundra (6-2, 4-6, 11-9). On Sunday, the sophomore would easily win his last singles match of the tournament (6-3, 6-4), over UConn's Brady Flanagan.
Senior Andrei Crapcenco, freshman Charlie James, and sophomore Aditya Vashistha each finished the shootout with 2-0 records in singles play. Crapcenco completed both matches with straight-set victories, defeating NJIT's Lukas Zvikas (7-5, 7-5), Army's Nikita Larichev (6-2, 6-4). James also finished with two straight set wins, outdueling NJIT's Zac Castagna (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and UConn's Christian Provenzano (6-3, 6-2). Vashistha would need three sets in both of his victories, defeating Army's David Mitchell (4-6, 6-3, 10-2) and UConn's John Holtmann (6-3, 3-6, 10-4).
St. John's upperclassmen Alan Nunez Aguilera and Luka Sucevic performed well over the weekend, despite both dropping one of their singles matches. Aguilera finished 2-1 for the tournament in singles play, claiming victories over Army's Myles Conlin (7-6, 4-6, 10-7) and UConn's Yili Zheng (6-4, 6-1). Sucevic finished 1-1 in singles play, defeating UConn's Jack McLister (6-4, 6-3).
In his lone singles match of the tournament, junior Ognjen Trejgut defeated NJIT's George Svensson (6-1, 6-0).
In doubles play, Charlie James finished with a perfect 4-0 record for the weekend, featuring with Trejgut on Friday, Sucevic on Saturday, and Vashistha on Sunday. Crapcenco, Vukicevic, and senior Alex Roszkowski each claimed three doubles victories for the Johnnies over the weekend.
The Red Storm will play one last fall invitational from Nov. 2-4, as they travel to New Haven, Conn. for the three-day Yale Invitational, hosted at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
