St. John’s Goes 10-2 at the Brandeis Invitational

Fares Ferjani, Karolina Cieslar, and Karolina Kaleta each finished with perfect, 18-0 records for the afternoon.
The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass., on Sunday afternoon and the squads combined for a 10-2 record. Both the men's and women's teams finished the tournament with 5-1 records, picking up victories over Brandeis, MIT, Brown, Cornell, and Boston College. Both teams lost to Yale, 14-13, in their respective matchups.
Sophomore Fares Ferjani and seniors Karolina Cieslar and Karolina Kaleta finished the invitational with perfect 18-0 records in their saber competitions.
The men's saber side led the way with 44 wins on the afternoon and went 6-0, as Ferjani posted 18 victories, while Ben Natanzon, Dalton Walker, and Sal Centanni won a combined 26 bouts. Ferjani and Natanzon were one win away from each having perfect weekends as they finished with victories in 29 of their 30 contests.
Sophomore Maxime Tarasiewicz starred for the Johnnies in the men's foil competition, finishing with a 13-5 record for the tournament. Ivan Zagoruiko and Nathan Vaysberg excelled in the men's epee competition, claiming 14 and 11 wins, respectively, en route to a perfect 6-0 record for the weekend.
On the women's side, the saber team enjoyed a stellar day on the strip going 36-18 for the tournament. Despite only having two sabers compete all afternoon, Cieslar and Kaleta never dropped a match and finished with flawless 18-0 records.
In women's foil, senior Kasia Lachman and freshman Arianna Pappone each finished 16-2 records for the weekend and propelled the Red Storm to a 6-0 record in the invitational.
Sophomore Andrea Vittoria Rizzi and junior Dominique Tannous collectively claimed 29 victories in the epee competition. The women's epee team went 5-1 for the weekend, as both the men's and the women's epee squads combined for 75 wins at the Brandeis Invitational.
NEXT UP
The next invitational for the Johnnies will be the lone home contest of the 2018-19 campaign, which will be held at the Taffner Field House on Jan. 19, 2019.
