Red Storm to welcome some of nation’s most elite programs to Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's and women's fencing programs will host their prestigious annual home invitational this Saturday, Jan. 19, inside Taffner Field House beginning at 10 a.m.
St. John's will be hosting five of the most illustrious fencing programs in America, as Columbia, Harvard, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State will make the trip to Queens. The six programs have combined to win 28 of the 29 team NCAA Championships since fencing became a co-ed sport in 1990. Penn State has claimed 13 of those national titles, while Notre Dame is the two-time defending national champion.
In 2018, the five schools coming to Queens formed the top five at the 2018 NCAA Championship and produced four of the six individual national champions.
Last season at the St. John's Invitational, the Red Storm men's fencing squad came away with one victory, as the men's side defeated Ohio State, who ranked No. 2 in the College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll at the time. The men's epee team finished the invitational with a 25-20 record. Sean White and Ivan Zagoruiko combined for 19 of the 25 men's epee victories.
The women's team finished in sixth place, at the 2018 St. John's Invitational against exceptional competition, but Karolina Cieslar and Ally Ryf led the way with a team-high 11 victories apiece. The Notre Dame's women's squad went undefeated to bring home the invitational title for the first time since 2013.
The Red Storm dominated its lone team competition of the season so far with a 10-2 record at the Brandeis Invitational. The four men saber fencers who competed combined to go a team-best 44-10, while sophomore Fares Ferjani registered wins in all 18 of his matches. Cieslar and Karolina Kaleta opened up their 2018-19 campaign in phenomenal fashion with perfect 18-0 records in women's saber.
The Johnnies will have a quick turnaround after the St. John's Invitational, heading to Philadelphia for the Temple University Invitational the following day.
