St. John’s Falls Short, 64-59, against Wake Forest

Tiana England leads the Johnnies with 16 points and nine assists
Despite a 20-point fourth quarter effort, the St. John's women's basketball team fell short to Wake Forest, 64-59, on Sunday afternoon at LJVM Coliseum.
Tiana England continued to produce for the Red Storm, finishing just shy of a double-double with a team-high 16 points and nine assists. The Stamford, Conn., native also added five rebounds and grabbed trio of steals for the Red Storm.
Qadashah Hoppie picked up 15 points and five boards in 31 minutes of action. The Staten Island native drained 5-of-10 from the field, hitting 3-of-7 from three-point range.
Curteeona Brelove netted four of her seven shot attempts from the field to finish with 10 points.
Despite the loss, the Red Storm continued to be a force on the glass, bringing down a total 34 rebounds. The Johnnies have now grabbed at least 30 boards in six of the team's seven contests.
St. John's won the turnover battle, 12-10, converting 12 of those Wake Forest miscues into 13 points.
Wake Forest brought the heat early, breaking out on a 7-0 run in the opening minutes of action before Akina Wellere snapped the Demon Deacons' streak with a shot from beyond the arc to put the Red Storm on the board, 7-3.
With Wake Forest leading, 15-8, at the 4:26 mark in the opening frame, the Johnnies rattled off a 6-0 run to pull the contest within three, 15-12. Shortly after Wake Forest broke off on an 8-0 run down the stretch of the opening quarter to close out the first 10 minutes of action with a, 23-12 advantage.
St. John's defense amped up the pressure in the early going of the second quarter, holding the Demon Deacons scoreless until the 7:25 mark. The pace of the game slowed down for both teams during second stanza with the Red Storm and the Demon Deacons combining for 22 points in the frame. Wake Forest entered the intermission with a 34-23 lead.
Coming out of the break, the Demon Deacons continued to be a force offensively as the Red Storm faced it largest deficit of the game, 42-27, with 5:53 left to play in the third quarter. The Johnnies continued to battle, making five of their six shot attempts over the tail end of the frame to pull the score within 11, 50-39, after 30 minutes of action.
In the fourth quarter, St. John's clawed back within four, 63-59, with under 25 seconds to play, as Hoppie and England combined for nine points down the stretch. However with the clock winding down, Wake Forest cemented the win with a block by Ona Udoh to stop the comeback.
The Red Storm returns to Queens where they will play back-to-back games, starting with Yale on Dec., 6 at 7 p.m. before welcoming ACC foe Florida State to Carnesecca Arena on Dec., 9 at 2 p.m.
