QUEENS, N.Y. - Looking to cap off a historic day in St. John's Athletics, the men's tennis team fell just short in a 5-2 defeat versus Middle Tennessee State on Saturday evening at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
The Red Storm (1-3) has now lost three-consecutive dual matches, and has dropped its first match at home this season.
MTSU (7-1) won the first two matches during doubles play to claim the point, however, the pairing of Ognjen Trejgut and Alex Roszkowski had a 5-3 lead from the No. 3 position, but the match went unfinished.
In singles play, the Blue Raiders won the first four matches to claim the victory.
Luka Sucevic battled from the No. 1 spot, winning the opening set, 6-3, before dropping the second frame to send the match to a third and final set. The junior rebounded for a 6-4 win in the third set to get the home side on the board.
Alan Nunez Aguilera also claimed a singles win for the Johnnies, picking up a victory from the No. 3 position. Aguilera won the opening set in a thrilling, 7-6 (6), fashion, and was leading 2-1 in the second before the match was retired in Aguilera's favor.
St. John's will return to action on Feb. 9 when the Red Storm host Wagner at the National Tennis Center with first serve scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
