QUEENS, N.Y. - Opening the outdoor season, the St. John's track and field team competed at a pair of meets over the St. Patrick's Day weekend. The Red Storm sent competitors to the Hurricane Invitational in Miami and the Maryland Invitational in College Park.
Maryland Invitational
In the single-day event in Maryland, St. John's saw great performances in the field events to lead the Johnnies to a solid opening to the outdoor season.
Esmarelda Reyes provided the top highlight of the afternoon for St. John's, claiming the women's javelin title with a 41.12-meter toss by the freshman to also qualify for the ECAC's on her first throw of the outdoor season. Olivia Pantale also earned a trip to the podium in the event, finishing second with a 40.97-meter throw.
Nyla Woods opened her outdoor season with a third-place mark in the hammer throw, tossing a 52.01-meter hammer to also book her trip to the ECAC's in the event. Jennifer Odoemene and Jillian Dorego joined the senior with top-10 finishes, posting sixth and seventh place results respectively.
Odoemene nearly reached the podium in the discus finals, finishing fourth with a 41.71-meter top score.
Capturing her flight title, Amarys Berry finished fourth overall in the shot put with a 12.87-meter throw to just miss an ECAC qualifying score. Berry was one-of-four Johnnies to finish in the top-10 with Bernadette McGowan (6th), Woods (7th), and Brianna Hayes (8th) joining the sophomore.
Moving into the track events, Jasmine Burkett finished with a solid day for the Red Storm, posting a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter run after winning her qualifying section, and leading the 4x100-meter relay team to fifth.
Freshman Leah Rivers also shined in her first-career outdoor meet at the collegiate level, running to a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter finals with a time of 2:26.46.
In the long-distance events, Stephanie Gerland provided a spark by scoring in a pair of events. The sophomore won her section in the 1500-meter run for a 10th place overall final and followed with an eighth-place mark in the 3000-meter run.
Chenoa Sebastian scored in the 400-meter hurdles for the Johnnies with a 1:07.22 time to finish seventh in the event.
Therese Gallagher also reached the podium in the 300-meter steeplechase event by finishing second with an 11:25.43 time. The sophomore was only one-of-two competitors to finish with a time better than 11:26.00.
Miami Invitational
Sending a much-smaller squad to the Magic City, St. John's represented strong at the two-day event hosted by the University of Miami.
Maya Stephens led the way for the Johnnies with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash. The senior's 52.91 time was second among runners attached to a university and just 0.09 second behind the top-collegiate finisher. In the same event, Kafi Ottley and Torisha LaForce finished 19th and 28th, respectively.
Leah Anderson also continued to build off her solid indoor season, finishing seventh in the 200-meter dash at 24.36. The freshman posted the fourth-best time among collegiate competitors.
St. John's returns to action on March 24 with a trip to the City of Brotherly Love for the Penn Challenge at historic Franklin Field.
