St. John's Finishes Sixth at Penn Challenge

PHILADELPHIA - In the first of two visits to historic Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, the St. John's track and field team finished sixth at the Penn Challenge in Philadelphia.
It was the third outdoor meet of the season for the Johnnies as the team looks to round into shape before the push of upcoming championship meets.
St. John's was led by a title performance from Shannon Page who claimed the 800-meter run championship. The junior shaved two seconds off her second lap to finish with a time of 2:15.39 and the title.
The Red Storm also saw another trio of podium appearances as Esmarelda Reyes, Olivia Pantale, and Winona Peace all earned medals for the Johnnies.
Reyes shined for the second-consecutive meet as the freshman posted a 28.56 time to finish second in the 200-meter dash. The freshman won the women's javelin title last week at the Maryland Invitational, and was one-of-two competitors to finish with a time below 29 seconds. Reyes grabbed a fifth-place finish in the javelin throw to go along with her silver medal in the 200-meter dash.
Also competing in the javelin, Pantale saved her best for last with a 40.52-meter dash on her final throw of the event to finish third. The sophomore was part of a trio of underclassmen who reached the podium, joining a freshman from Villanova and a sophomore from Connecticut. Pantale also finished 12th and 16th in the discus and hammer throws respectively.
Peace reached the podium in the women's triple jump event, opening up the contest with a 10.59-meter jump on her first attempt to finish third. The junior finished just 0.01 meters behind the second-place finisher from Villanova. Peace also finished ninth and 13th in the long jump and 100-meter dash respectively.
Chenoa Sebastian also found the scoresheet for the Johnnies, finishing sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.16. The senior also just missed scoring in the 400-meter hurdles with a seventh-place mark.
Jennifer Odoemene continued her hot start to outdoor season, reaching the scoresheet in the women's discus throw. The junior's fifth throw finished as her best, traveling 43.24-meters to grab a fifth-place finish. Odoemene just missed scoring in the hammer throw as well, finishing eighth.
Nyla Woods was able to finish fifth in the hammer throw with a 52.60-meter toss to finish as the final competitor to reach the 52-meter mark in the event.
Antonia Frazier also posted a fifth-place mark in the high jump for St. John's. The BIG EAST pentathlon champion finished with a 1.51-meter core.
In the shot put, Amarys Berry just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish at 13.93 meters. The sophomore's final throw proved to be her best, finishing just under a meter out of third.
Danica Wens became the final Red Storm compeitior to score for St. John's, finishing as the third Johnnie to reach the scoresheet in the javelin throw with a 36.85-meter throw and a sixth-place mark.
St. John's will take the week off to prepare for a pair of meets over Apr. 6-7, competiting in the Hurricane Alumni and Wagner College Invitationals.
