MINNEAPOLIS - The St. John's baseball team exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings of Thursday's contest with Minnesota, coasting to an 11-5 victory over the Golden Gophers at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Jamie Galazin tied a career-high with four RBIs, going 2-for-4 with, a home run, a triple, and three runs scored.
Robert Boselli III and Wyatt Mascarella also launched homers for the Red Storm. Mascarella reached base in four of his five plate appearances, going 3-for-4 with a walk and scoring a pair of runs. Boselli reached base in three of his four plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. The senior also legged out a triple in addition to his round tripper.
Josh Shaw went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, marking the fifth time in his St. John's career that he has recorded a pair of two-baggers in the same game. The junior second baseman drove in two runs on the evening.
Extending his hitting streak to 23 games dating back to last season, John Valente logged a pair of base hits and drove in a run. The graduate student has now reached base safely in 36-straight appearances since last April.
Matt Woods also recorded a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Additionally, Anthony Brocato singled and scored a run against the Golden Gophers.
Joe LaSorsa earned the win in relief, allowing just his first earned run of the season in four innings of work.
The Red Storm wasted no time getting on the board, as Galazin battled to draw a walk in the game's second at-bat before Shaw ripped an RBI double to left center, scoring the speedster from first and putting the Johnnies ahead 1-0 in the blink of an eye. Shaw moved to third in the next at-bat on a grounder to the right side, but his position soon became irrelevant, as Boselli launched one into the seats in left center, extending the Johnnies' lead to three after a half an inning.
After Michael LoPresti worked a scoreless home half, the Red Storm bats came alive again in the top of the second. The first four batters of the inning singled, the last of which brought home a run and loaded the bases for Galazin. The senior promptly ripped a ball to left center that bounced over the head of a Minnesota outfielder, allowing him to clear the bases and take third. Next up was Shaw, who recorded his second double of the evening and scored Galazin to make it 8-0 in favor of the Johnnies. After the Gophers finally recorded the inning's first out, Boselli unleashed another three-bagger to the wall, bringing home Shaw and pushing the Red Storm advantage to 9-0.
Minnesota broke through with a run in the home half of the second, but Mascarella bumped the Red Storm lead back to nine in the first at-bat of the third, launching a solo shot to left center. The junior's first homer as a Johnnie made it 10-1 in favor of the Red Storm.
After the Gophers used single runs in the third and fourth innings to cut back into the St. John's lead, Galazin laced a solo homer to left center to make 11-3 Johnnies with four and a half innings in the books.
Following Galazin's round tripper in the fifth, neither team scored again until the bottom of the eighth when Minnesota pushed across two runs to make it a six-run lead for St. John's, 11-5, heading to the final frame.
