QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's baseball team picked up its fourth-consecutive win on Tuesday afternoon, kicking off a five-game week with a 6-1 victory over Albany at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Four St. John's pitchers combined to limit the Great Danes to one run on the day. Sam Lara made his first career start, tossing four innings of one-run ball. Turner French, who improved to 2-0 on the year after notching the win, recorded three scoreless frames to maintain his 0.00 ERA through 12 appearances on the season. Joe Kelly kept Albany off the board for 1.1 innings before Aaron Herr came in to register the game's final two outs, both of which were strikeouts.
Offensively, Anthony Brocato led the way for St. John's, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.
Josh Shaw and Jamie Galazin both singled and drove in a run, while freshman Chris Stefl registered a pair of singles and an RBI.
Robert Boselli III and Ryan Hogan each recorded a sacrifice fly for the Red Storm. Boselli, the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, has now driven in at least one run in nine-consecutive appearances.
After Albany pushed home the game's first run in the opening frame, the Johnnies responded with a tally of their own in the home half. After singling with one out and advancing to second on a passed ball, Mike Antico came around to score on a Shaw double to left in the following at-bat, knotting the contest at one.
Following back-to-back 1-2-3 frames from Lara, the Johnnies climbed ahead by posting a two-spot in the bottom of the third. Valente and Antico drew walks to lead off the inning before advancing 90 feet apiece on a Shaw sac bunt. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Boselli lifted a towering sac fly to left, scoring Valente and putting the Red Storm on top, 2-1. Next up was Galazin, who singled through the left side to plate Antico and bump the St. John's lead to a pair.
The Johnnies added another tally in the bottom of the fourth, as Brocato led the inning off with a two-bagger before coming around to score on a Hogan sac fly two batters later.
St. John's plated the game's final two runs in the home half of the sixth, as Brocato laced his second double of the day to score Jordan Gillerman from first with nobody out. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Brocato came home on a Stefl base knock up the middle to make it 6-1 in favor of the Red Storm.
The Johnnies return to action tomorrow afternoon, playing host to Iona at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast live on RedStormSports.com.
