St. John’s places four runners in the top-10 in the event.
The St. John's cross country team finished second at the NYIT Invitational on Saturday finishing one point behind Fordham in the meet.
This marks the third-consecutive season the Red Storm has finished in either first or second place at the event.
"Despite placing four runners in the top ten and posting six personal bests we were edged by a point by Fordham for the team title," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "Our ladies got out well and packed up as we planned. We need to finish over the last 500 meters a bit better but we made significant progress in the last week."
The Johnnies comprised four of the top-10 finishers and finished with 33 team points but still fell to Fordham, who placed their first three runners in the top-five and ended with 32 points. Together the two schools had eight of the first 10 finishers in the event.
Stephanie Gerland paced the Red Storm finishing second with a time of 18:10.20. The junior cut one minute off her time from last week's Ed Joyce Fordham Fiasco. Behind her were juniors Therese Gallagher (18:52.77) and Jacqueline Gallagher (19:08.54) who placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Shannon Page (19:44.12) edged out Fordham's Maeve O'Connor by less than two seconds to finish ninth. Next for St. John's was Nicole McCarthy who came in 11th place (19:55.17) and rounding out the event for the Red Storm was Melissa Greaves who finished 37th (25:43.13).
St. John's will compete next at the Paul Short Invite hosted by Lehigh on Saturday, Sept. 29.
"A few quality workouts over the next two weeks should result in posting more personal bests over the 6k distance at the Paul Short Meet," Hurt said.
