The St. John's women's soccer program will begin BIG EAST play on Sunday when it welcomes No. 10 Georgetown to Belson Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The contest will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Ralph Bednarzak providing the play by play.
The Johnnies enter league play with a record of 5-0-2 in conference home openers dating back to the 2011 season. The Johnnies have not lost a BIG EAST home opener since falling to Seton Hall during the 2010 campaign. The Red Storm will look to maintain its undefeated streak at home this season and build upon its record of 36-6-7 at Belson Stadium dating back to 2013.
The Johnnies welcome the Hoyas to Belson Stadium on the heels of a 3-2 victory against Delaware last Friday. Paced by Christina Bellero's first career multi-goal game and Zsani Kajan's 73rd minute game winner, the St. John's women's soccer team recorded its fourth home win of the season. As a result the Johnnies remain undefeated inside the friendly confines of Belson Stadium.
For Bellero's efforts against Delaware last Friday, the senior was rewarded her first recognition from the BIG EAST this season, finding a spot on the conference's weekly honor roll.
Under the direction of Head Coach Dave Nolan, Georgetown comes to Queens with a record of 7-0-2 and has yet to record a loss on the 2018 campaign. The reigning BIG EAST champions opened the season with a win at Georgia before recording draws in back-to-back contest with Virginia Tech and Duke. The Hoyas enter play with St. John's riding a six-game win streak including the team's most victory over Columbia, 4-0, last Sunday. The win marked their fifth shutout of the season in just nine tries.
The Hoyas are led offensively by Kyra Carusa and BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Caitlin Farrell. Carusa and Farrell have each chipped in five goals apiece on the 2018 campaign. Carusa, a native of San Diego, has also dished out a pair of assists on the season for a total 12 points. Senior Arielle Schechtman has started seven games in goal for the Hoyas this year, compiling a league best 0.27 goals against average. The Del Mar, Calif., native has also stopped 93.9 percent of the shots on goal that she has faced and has recorded a conference-best five shutouts.
The Red Storm and Georgetown share a series history dating back to 1990. In 19 all-time meetings between the two schools, Georgetown holds a 9-7-3 advantage over the Johnnies. The two teams last met on Sept. 24, 2017. After holding the Hoyas scoreless for 81 minutes, Georgetown chipped in a late goal to capitalize in a 1-0 victory over the Red Storm.
