Mackedon Finishes in Top-Five at Wildcat Fall Invitational

Mackedon and Simon finish in the top-15 for St. John’s
St. John's had two golfers finish among the top-15 to lead the team to a fifth-place finish on Sunday at the 2018 Wildcat Fall Invitational.
St. John's was led by junior Gerald Mackedon who finished the tournament in a tie for fourth overall with a one-over 216 (71-73-72). This marked the junior's third top-five finish in as many events this year. The Port Jefferson native's final round performance was highlighted by seven birdies with four of those coming on the inward nine.
"It was another outstanding performance for Gerry [Mackedon]," St. John's Men's Golf Head Coach Mal Galletta said. "In just three events this year he has finished inside the top-five four us and I am sure he will look forward to keeping that streak alive in West Virginia next week."
Freshman Jack Simon had his best showing of the three-round tournament on Sunday as he turned in a level-par 71 to tie for 15th with an overall score of seven-over 220 (76-73-71). The rookie opened up play with seven-straight par shots before draining a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole. Simon closed out the final round with a total 14 pars and two birdies to give the Red Storm two golfers among the top-15 finishers.
Dublin, Ireland, native Ross Moore made 11 pars on the day along with a pair birdies to turn in a three-round 224 and tie for 28th place.
Senior Austin Briggs and freshman Tyler Gerbavsits rounded out scoring for the Red Storm lineup, each carding a three-round 227. Following a bogey on his opening hole, Gerbavsitis recorded 14 pars and a birdie on the par-4 10th hole to post a two-over 73.
Competing as an individual, Matthew Sweeney shot a three-round 242.
Tripp Summerlin and Chance Watson of Appalachian State earned co-medalist honors, tying for first after shooting a two-over 215 in the three-round tournament
Appalachian State claimed the team title with an 864, bettering second place Delaware (872) by eight strokes. BIG EAST foe Georgetown (873) finished third while VCU (875) came in fourth. St. John's closed with an 877 to finish in the top-five teams, while Seton Hall (880) and Villanova (882) rounded out the seven-team field.
St. John's will next compete on Oct. 8-9 when it travels to Bridgeport, W.Va. for the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational.
