St. John’s places two in the top-15 in their first meet of the 2018 season
In its first action of the 2018 campaign, the St. John's cross country team finished fifth of 13 teams at the Ed Joyce Fordham Fiasco on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park.
The Red Storm placed two in the top-15 and four in the top-40 finishers at the 5K event. The Johnnies placed fourth at the event in 2017. St. John's ran an average time of 20:06.31 and finished 17 points behind Fordham, who finished fourth as the host school.
"We had a exceptional opening effort at the Fordham Fiasco posting a number of personal bests to start our season," Head Coach Jim Hurt said.
Lipscomb took the top spot with Princeton coming in second and Manhattan finishing third.
Ant Howard finished as the leading runner for the Red Storm posting a time of 18:39.67 to place sixth. Stephanie Gerland placed 12th finishing with a time of 19:10.39. The junior improved by over 10 seconds from her time at the same meet last season.
Jacqueline Gallagher (20:36.83) and Shannon Page (20:47.27) finished just over 10 seconds apart from each other in 36th and 38th, respectively. Rounding out the top five for the Red Storm was Nicole McCarthy (21:17.39, 49th).
"Ant and Stephanie ran stellar races up front and Jackie, Shannon, & Nicole shows we have a solid top five," Hurt said.
Melissa Greaves finished out the scoring for St. John's at the Fordham Fiasco (108th, 25:27.65).
"Melissa Greaves looked great as well. Another week of training and getting all our runners healthy and in the line should keep our opening momentum going next week at the NYIT Invite."
The Red Storm will run that invitational next weekend at Old Westbury, N.Y. next Saturday at 10 a.m. St. John's placed second in the event in 2017 with 37 points.
