Red Storm will kick off the second half of conference play with the Bulldogs on Friday
With the first half of BIG EAST play in the rear-view mirror, the St. John's women's basketball team will kick off the second round of conference action on Friday evening, when the Johnnies welcome Butler to Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup.
The contest will be live streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports Go. Sky Lindsay and Ralph Bednarcyzk will be on the call from Queens.
The Johnnies enter Friday's contest after splitting a pair of decisions last weekend, with a win against Georgetown before falling to Villanova inside Carnesecca Arena.
Despite the team's most recent loss to the Wildcats, Tiana England showcased her stellar scoring ability, netting a season-high 18 points on a 7-of-9 shooting effort from the floor. During the Johnnies 1-1 weekend, the Stamford, Conn., native averaged a team-high 13.5 points per game on 62.5 percent shooting from the floor.
England also brought down 2.5 boards per game to go along with 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per contest, earning herself a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this year. On the season, England paces the BIG EAST in assists, dishing out 5.2 helpers per game.
Facing the Bulldogs for the second time the season, St. John's will look to avenge an 66-45 setback on Jan. 6 at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. Qadashah Hoppie fueled the Red Storm's offense in the two programs first contest, as the sophomore guard finished with a team-high 14 points.
Friday's rematch with Butler marks the 12th all-time meeting between the two programs with the Johnnies leading the series, 8-3. St. John's has been successful against the Bulldogs in Queens, boasting an all-time 4-1 advantage against Butler inside the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena.
Butler enters Friday on the heels of two-straight losses to DePaul and No. 10/9 Marquette last weekend. Despite a pair of setbacks, the Bulldogs are currently boasting an overall 16-4 record and are 6-3 in conference play.
Butler has been successful defensively this season, leading the conference and ranking inside the top-10 in the NCAA for steals per contest (12.3 spg). The Bulldogs also pace the league in scoring defense, holding opponents to 55.5 points per game, good enough for 15th in all of Division I.
Butler is paced offensively by three double digit scorers in Whitney Jennings (14.6 ppg), Kristen Spolyar (12.4 ppg) and Tori Schickel (12.4 ppg).
After taking on the Bulldogs, the Johnnies will wrap up their four-game homestand, when the team welcomes Xavier to Carnesecca Arena on Sunday, Feb. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on BIG EAST Digital Network.
