Tyler Gerbavsits and Alex Kyriacou finish inside the top-25
St. John's sophomore Tyler Gerbavsits turned in an even-par 71 on Tuesday to lead the way for the men's golf team in the final round of action at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa.
Gerbavsits tied for 17th overall, shooting a 77 followed by a pair of 71s to check in at 219 for the Red Storm. The sophomore's final-round performance was highlighted by five birdies, with four of them coming on the inward nine.
Behind Gerbavsits performance, the Johnnies shot a team score of 293 over the final 18 holes, 11 shots better than their previous round. As a result, the Red Storm finished in seventh place with an overall team total of 905 (308-304-293).
Freshman Alex Kyriacou recorded his best round on Tuesday, turning in a 72 to finish inside the top-25 with an overall 222 (74-76-72).
Senior Gerald Mackedon tied for 41st overall with a score of 233 (76-82-75).
Sophomore's Jack Simon and Joseph Busiello rounded out scoring for the Red Storm, carding a 235 (83-77-75) and 240 (81-80-79), respectively.
Playing as an individual, Gage Wolfle carded a three-round 225, highlighted by a final-round 72.
"We had three golfers who were new to competing in this tournament," Head Coach Mal Galletta said. "However, you could see Alex, Joe and Gage continue to become more comfortable and greatly improve over the three rounds. Overall I was very proud of everyone's continuous growth and we are ready to carry that over to the Lehigh Invitational later this month."
Rhode Island claimed the tournament title with a combined score of seven-under 845. Christian Cavaliere of Boston College earned medalist honors, firing a three-round 16-under 197.
The Johnnies will return to action on Oct. 18-19 when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Lehigh Invitational.
