Zsani Kajan netted the Johnnies’ loan goal in the 79th minute
Trailing Creighton, 1-0, in the second half of Sunday's contest, the St. John's women's soccer team fought furiously to net the equalizer in the 79th minute before eventually playing the Bluejays to a 1-1 double overtime draw at Belson Stadium.
Six St. John's seniors were honored prior to the contest, as the program recognized Samantha Masur, Madeline McCracken, Christine McBeath, Jordan Kamp, Zsani Kajan and Meredith Reinhardt in their final home game at Belson Stadium.
Kajan found the back of the net once again for St. John's, tallying her fourth goal in the last two games and her 10th on the season. Kajan is now one of just three St. John's women's soccer players in program history to record double-digit scoring in multiple seasons. The redshirt junior joins Cristin Burtis and Rachel Daly on that list. With 10 goals over the campaign, Kajan has bumped her career total up to 23, moving into fifth on the Red Storm's all-time scoring sheet.
McCracken picked up the assist on Kajan's tally, for her first of the season and the second of her Red Storm career.
Reinhardt proved steadfast between the pipes for the Johnnies, registering six saves against a high-powered Creighton offense, with four of those coming in overtime.
Creighton controlled possession in the early going of Sunday's contest. The visiting team fired off the first three shots of the match but the Red Storm's backline stood strong to keep the Bluejays off the board.
Kayla Mesaros registered the Johnnies' lone opportunity to get on the board in the opening half, but her attempt was blocked by a Bluejays' defender.
Despite Creighton outshooting the Red Storm, 7-1, in the opening half, both programs entered the intermission scoreless.
After holding the Bluejays without a goal through 64 minutes, Creighton found the back of the net in the 65th. The sequence began as Jordy Rothwell fielded a long pass up to freshman Skylar Heinrich. The rookie forward punched one home, for her 11th goal of the season to give the visiting team a 1-0 lead.
Just under 15 minutes later, the Johnnies responded as McCracken send a pass across to Kajan. The Budapest, Hungary, native corralled the ball before powering a left-footed shot to the corner of the cage for the equalizer.
With the clock winding down in regulation, Creighton send one on target in the 88th minute but Reinhardt was there to make the diving save, forcing the match into extra time.
In the two overtime periods, St. John's continued to press the issue. The Johnnies recorded five shots and two corner kicks before the match ended in a draw.
St. John's will wrap up its regular season on Oct. 31, traveling to Georgetown to take on the No. 14 ranked Hoyas in a 2 p.m. tilt.
