QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2019) –  The St. John's men's tennis team will be back in action this coming week as Aditya Vashistha and Djuro Opacic venture to Tulsa, Okla., for the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships.
Â
The University of Tulsa is hosting the championships for the 14th straight year, with matches taking place at the LaFortune Tennis Center & Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The ITA All-American Championships brings the top Division I players from across the country together for one of the main fall events in collegiate tennis.
Â
Vashistha and Opacic are slated to start the tournament in the pre-qualifying singles draw, scheduled for Oct. 5-6. Qualifying singles and doubles will be held Oct. 7-8. Main draw matches will follow after qualifying singles and doubles from Oct. 9-13.
Â
Last season, four members of the St. John's men's tennis squad (Andrei Crapcenco, Luka Sucevic, Alan Nunez Aguilera, and Dusan Vukicevic) combined for a total of five singles victories at the event. The tournament was highlighted by senior Andrei Crapcenco, who won his first two singles matches in the Flight B bracket in three-set thrillers. Crapcenco and Baylor's Jimmy Bendeck both needed an extra game to take the first and second sets, but it would be Crapcenco who prevailed in the final set, winning the match 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
Â
The Johnnies are coming off a successful weekend at the Hofstra Invitational in Hempstead, N.Y. in which they claimed three singles bracket championships and one of the two doubles championships. The squad collectively earned 23 victories at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Â
Last week, Vashistha represented the BIG EAST at the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. The junior from Bikaner, India was victorious in the first round of the 32-player singles draw, topping the No. 32 player in the ITF Rankings, Gui Osorio of San Diego, 6-3, 7-6(2). The junior fell in straight sets in his Round of 16 contest to Santa Barbara's Joseph Guillin. He also joined fellow Johnnie Jessica Livianu in the mixed doubles draw, completing the competition with a 1-1 record.
