Sean Mooney fanned eight in 5.2 innings
LOS ANGELES- Despite receiving a stellar outing from All-American hurler Sean Mooney, the St. John's baseball team dropped its season opener to No. 3 UCLA, 3-2, on Friday night in Westwood.
Mooney dazzled in a no-decision to open his junior campaign, striking out eight and allowing just three hits, all of which were singles, over 5.2 innings at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Mooney's lone run of the evening crossed the plate after he exited the game with a runner on second and two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior outfielder Mike Antico scored both runs for St. John's, each of which was set up by swiping second after reaching on an error. Friday marked Antico's first career outing with two steals.
The Red Storm's two runs were each driven in by a base hit from a Johnnie in his Division I debut, as Mitchell Henshaw and Carson Bartels brought Antico home with singles in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. Henshaw added another single in the ninth to register a multi-hit game in his first game with the Red Storm.
After failing to advance a runner past first base in the opening three frames, the Red Storm opened the scoring in the top of the fourth. Antico led off the inning by reaching on a catcher's interference before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch with one out. With Antico just 90 feet from home, Henshaw pushed a single through the right side and easily scored the run, putting the Johnnies ahead 1-0.
Following two more scoreless frames from Mooney, the Red Storm manufactured another run in the top of the sixth. Antico led things off in this inning as well, reaching on an error by the shortstop before swiping second again. Bartels then brought home the speedy junior with a single to shallow right, as Antico did well to avoid a tag at home and give the Johnnies their second run of the evening.
UCLA responded in the home half, bringing home its first run of the game and cutting its deficit to one. Chase Strumpf led off the inning with a single before a punch out and a sac bunt gave the Bruins a runner on second with two gone. St. John's went to the bullpen after the second out, as Turner French entered in relief of Mooney. Jake Pries prompty smacked an RBI triple off the wall, but Joe Kelly entered and was able to keep the lead at one by recording a two-pitch out to end the frame.
The Bruins plated the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh, as UCLA used a single, a sac bunt, a catcher's interference and two walks to move ahead 3-2 heading into the eighth. Nick Mondak pitched his first game action since Feb. 19, 2017, in the seventh before ultimately being saddled with the loss.
Freshman Matt Semon delivered a scoreless eighth in his first appearance for the Red Storm, but the offense was unable to tie the contest as UCLA took the contest, 3-2.
St. John's and UCLA will return to action tomorrow afternoon, squaring off in the second game of their series at 5 p.m. ET.
