The Johnnies look to improve to 6-2 with two wins in Tennessee.
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the first time this spring season, the St. John's men's tennis team will travel south of the Mason-Dixon line for a pair of matches against Middle Tennessee and Lipscomb in Tennessee this weekend.
St. John's and Middle Tennessee will square off on Friday at 5 p.m. in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Johnnies will then venture to Nashville for a match with the Lipscomb Bison the following evening at 5 p.m.
St. John's enters the weekend with a 4-2 overall record, coming off of a 6-1 loss to No. 9 Columbia on Feb. 10. The Red Storm's lone point of the match came from last week's BIG EAST Player of the Week, Alan Nunez Aguilera, who defeated No. 32 Adam Ambrozy in three sets, 7-5, 7-6(2), 6-2.
Aguilera's win last weekend earned him a place in this week's ITA Top 125 rankings, sitting at No. 87 on the list. In his last two contests, the senior won both of his singles matches and finished 1-1 in doubles play.
Before the Johnnies' loss to Columbia, the Red Storm enjoyed a four-match winning streak, including three-consecutive sweeps over Marist, Siena, and Quinnipiac. Freshman Charlie James is 3-1 in his last four singles matches.
Friday's matchup marks the second-straight season that the Red Storm will battle Middle Tennessee. Last season, the men's tennis team fell just short in a 5-2 defeat versus the Blue Raiders State at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
Middle Tennessee contains a 5-6 record heading into Friday's match with the Johnnies. Stijn Slump is 3-0 in his last three singles matches and has recently taken over as the #1 singles player for the Blue Raiders.
Senior Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore has also played great tennis over the last three matches, posting a 2-1 record in singles play.
St. John's and Lipscomb will compete on the tennis court for the first time on Saturday. The Bison currently hold a 4-4 record and is led by junior Victor Chow. In the No. 1 singles and doubles post, the Peruvian leads Lipscomb with a 3-3 record over the team's last three matches.
After this weekend's road trip, Coach Dillon Pottish's squad will host Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the USTA National Tennis Center.
