Johnnies limited to one hit on the afternoon
The St. John's baseball team limited No. 24 UC Irvine to just three runs on six hits, but the Red Storm was held off the board for the second time this weekend and the Anteaters took the Sunday rubber match, 3-0, at Cicerone Field.
UC Irvine starter Trenton Denholm allowed just one hit and a walk in eight innings of work. After allowing a pair of St. John's runners to reach base in the second, he kept 16 straight Johnnies off the base paths before hitting Sean McGeehan to lead off the eighth. Taylor Rashi shut the door in the ninth for his fifth save of the year.
Jeff Belge was tagged with the loss despite tossing six solid innings. The junior southpaw surrendered two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight, just one off his career high.
Ryan Hogan tallied the lone hit of the day for the Red Storm (3-9), ripping a double down the left field line with one out in the second.
After going down in order in the top of the first, the Red Storm saw UC Irvine (9-4) jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the home half of the frame. A walk and a seeing-eye single preceded a one-out, two-run double to center from Matt Reitano. Following that two-bagger, Belge promptly struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
Following that early burst of runs, the teams went scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when a sac fly from Mikey Filia made it 3-0 in favor of UC Irvine.
The Red Storm will make its New York debut on Wednesday when its takes on Iona in New Rochelle. First pitch at City Park is scheduled for 3 p.m.
