Red Storm wins New York debut behind solid pitching performance
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The St. John's pitching staff limited Iona to just six hits and a single run on Wednesday afternoon, leading the Red Storm to victory in its New York debut, 7-1, against the Gaels at City Park.
Freshman Ian Murphy shined in his second collegiate start, surrendering just one hit and a walk in four innings of shutout work. The Swedesboro, N.J., native struck out five of the 15 batters he faced. Fellow freshman Matt Semon recorded the first win of his St. John's career after striking out three in two innings of one-run ball.
A pair of senior relievers closed out the victory for St. John's (4-9), as Joe Kelly twirled two scoreless innings before Turner French faced just three batters in the ninth.
The Red Storm displayed tremendous discipline at the dish, drawing 14 walks on the afternoon. Brandon Miller and Ryan Hogan each drew three bases on balls and drove in a pair of runs.
Wyatt Mascarella and Rudy Aguilar both went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Peter Abinanti also tallied a single and an RBI, marking the fifth time in six starts this season that the left fielder has recorded at least a base hit.
The Johnnies jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, as Carson Bartels drew a one-out walk before moving to third on an error and coming around to score on a Miller RBI fielder's choice two batters later.
Neither side scored again until the fifth, when St. John's and Iona each tacked on a single run. Mascarella ripped a one-out, ground-rule double before crossing the plate on a Hogan sac fly.
Leading by one after five, the Red Storm struck again in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded following an Aguilar single and two hit-by-pitches, Mascarella lifted a sac fly to right to make it 3-1 in favor of the Johnnies.
The Johnnies helped seal the victory two innings later with four runs in the top of the eighth. Bartels was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame before Mascarella, Miller and Sean McGeehan ripped three-straight singles, the second of which scored Bartels and put St. John's ahead 4-1. Hogan and Abinanti then drew bases-loaded walks to make it 6-1 before an RBI fielder's choice form Aguilar gave St. John's the 7-1 lead with which it would end the game.
The Red Storm will make it Jack Kaiser Stadium debut this weekend, hosting Kansas for a three-game set beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
