Red Storm and Gaels to meet on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in New Rochelle
The St. John's baseball team will make its first New York appearance of 2019 on Wednesday when the Johnnies travel to Iona for a 3 p.m. first pitch with the Gaels.
ICGaels.com will feature live stats for the contest, which will be held at City Park in New Rochelle.
The Red Storm (3-9) heads north to New Rochelle after playing seven games in the span of 10 days in California. Overall, 10 of the Red Storm's 12 outings this season have been contested in The Golden State. The Johnnies dropped a pair of series to the University of San Diego and No. 24 UC Irvine, taking one game apiece from the Torerors and the Anteaters. St. John's also came out on the wrong end of a midweek decision at Cal State Northridge.
The Red Storm pitched particularly well during its three-game set against the nationally ranked Anteaters this past weekend, turning in a staff ERA of 2.52 and surrendering just a pair of extra-base hits. All three of the Red Storm's weekend starters registered at least six strikeouts and allowed no more than two earned runs in their appearances.
Gavin Hollowell became the second Red Storm hurler to earn a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season after recording his first save of the year in St. John's Saturday win over No. 24 UC Irvine. Entering the contest with a man on first and one out in the seventh, the 6-foot-7 right-hander promptly picked off the runner before retiring seven of the final eight batters he faced. The Skillman, N.J., native allowed no hits and struck out three in 2.2 innings of work.
More than a few Johnnies enjoyed solid weekends at the dish in Irvine, none more so than Peter Abinanti. The Southern California product hit .364 on the weekend, highlighted by a 3-for-4 outing with a run scored in the Red Storm's Saturday victory. His three-knock outing capped a four-game hitting streak for the left fielder, who made his first career start in the finale of the San Diego series on March 4.
Ryan Hogan started the Johnnies' last two games against the Anteaters, going 3-for-7 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Wyatt Mascarella also hit better than .300 on the weekend, going 3-for-9 with a walk.
Freshman Ian Murphy is scheduled to make his second career start for the Red Storm on Wednesday. The Swedesboro, N.J., native was tagged with the loss against CSUN last Tuesday, but allowed just two hits and struck out a pair in three innings of work.
The Gaels (1-11), who were swept by East Tennessee State and UNC Asheville in the early going of the season, are hitting .216 as a team entering their Tuesday game with Stony Brook. Senior Fran Kinsey paces the team with a .283 batting average through 12 outings.
On the bump, Iona has recorded a team ERA of 7.94 and has allowed opponents to hit .290.
The Gaels are under the direction of first-year head coach Paul Panik, the brother of St. John's legend and World Series Champion Joe Panik.
