Junior southpaw strikes out seven in nine innings of one-run work
Making just his fourth start as a collegiate pitcher, junior Joe LaSorsa tossed a gem on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium, going the distance and leading St. John's to a 3-1 win over Kansas.
LaSorsa threw 111 pitches on the afternoon, allowing just four hits and a pair of walks in nine innings of one-run work. After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the junior southpaw held Kansas (13-5) scoreless over the game's final eight frames. He punched out a career-best seven batters and found the strike zone on 73 of his 111 pitches.
Brandon Miller led the Red Storm (6-9) offensively on Saturday afternoon, going 2-for-4 and blasting his first collegiate home run to put St. John's ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth.
Peter Abinanti and Wyatt Mascarella doubled for the Johnnies, while Mitchell Henshaw and Ryan Markey singled in the Red Storm's third-straight win and fourth in its last five games.
Colin Wetterau logged an RBI in the third to put St. John's on the board for the first time.
Rudy Karre led off the contest with a double down the left field line before coming around to score two batters later on a fielder's choice, giving Kansas a 1-0 lead after just a half an inning.
The Red Storm knotted the contest at one in the home half of the third, as Sean McGeehan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before some heads-up base running allowed him to come around and score. The junior centerfielder swiped second and took third as the throw sailed into center. Next up was Wettereau, who pulled a grounder to the right side, allowing McGeehan to head home and pulled the Johnnies even at one.
Following a 1-2-3 top of the fourth from LaSorsa, the Red Storm jumped on top in the home half, as Miller launched a one-out home run into the right field bullpen. Miller's bomb, the first of his collegiate career, left the park in a hurry and put the Johnnies ahead, 2-1, heading to the fifth.
The Johnnies added another insurance run in the sixth, as Mascarella doubled to left before coming around to score in the following at-bat. Attempting to sacrifice Mascarella to third, Miller dropped a perfect bunt in front of the Kansas catcher. The speedy outfielder was then hit with the throw down to first, as the ball scooted into foul territory and allowed Mascarella to head home.
The Red Storm will look to sweep the Jayhawks tomorrow at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. on ESPN3.
