St. John’s to Begin a Three-Game Set at Saint Louis on Friday Night

Red Storm has won seven of its last eight and eight of its last 10
After seeing its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon at Fairfield, the St. John's baseball team will look to start a new tear beginning on Friday night against St. Louis at 7 p.m. ET. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET while Sunday's finale is slated to start at 1 p.m.
Live stats for all three games of the series will be available at SLUBillikens.com.
The Red Storm's midweek loss to the Stags came in heartbreaking fashion, as Fairfield pushed across three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 4-3 at Alumni Baseball Diamond. St. John's tallied 12 hits and drew five walks on the afternoon, but left 13 runners on base. The Red Storm had not trailed before the bottom of the ninth.
With the Johnnies looking to bounce back, the Red Storm's weekend rotation of Joe LaSorsa, Sean Mooney and Jeff Belge has been nearly untouchable as of late, as none of the three hurlers has allowed more than two earned runs in an appearance since the start of the UC Irvine series on March 8. During that stretch, the rotation has combined to go 4-2 with a ERA of 1.05. LaSorsa became the first St. John's pitcher in two years to throw a complete game with an hour and 55 minute four-hitter against Kansas on March 16. Mooney has a career record of 21-5 and is just five victories away from tying the St. John's all-time wins mark. Belge has struck out eight batters in each of his last three appearances, becoming the first Red Storm hurler since Kyle Hansen in 2011 to register at least eight Ks in three-consecutive outings.
After bursting on the scene with three home runs in the span of six at-bats during his first two Division I games, Sean McGeehan hit just .103 over his next 13 outings. Entering the second game of the Hofstra doubleheader last Sunday batting .178 on the season, the Mercer County Community College transfer has been red hot over the team's last two games, going a combined 7-for-9 (.778) with two doubles. He went 3-for-4 with a pair of two-baggers and an RBI in the series finale against the Pride before going 4-for-5 at Fairfield on Wednesday. In that stretch of two games, he has raised his batting average by 100 points to .278. McGeehan is the first St. John's player in five years to record three outings of three or more hits in his first 17 collegiate appearances, as Robbie Knightes last accomplished the feat in 2014 en route to hitting .399 and garnering Freshman All-America honors.
McGeehan is not the only St. John's player to experience an offensive resurgence since the team's return to the Northeast. Over the squad's last nine games, seven Johnnies are hitting .290 or better, led by Mike Antico at .450 and Rudy Aguilar at .444. Hitting .194 as a team at the conclusion of their series with UC Irvine, the Johnnies are hitting a collective .301 since that 2-1 series loss to the now-No. 21 Anteaters, a stretch that has seen the team go 8-1.
The Saint Louis Billikens, the reigning champions of the Atlantic 10, enter the contest with a record of 11-13 after losing three of their last four, including a midweek loss to SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday.
The Billikens boast a team ERA of 2.59, good enough for sixth in the nation in that category. Saint Louis' projected Saturday and Sunday starters, Cody Luther and Jackson Wark, both carry ERAs of 1.70 or lower.
Two Billikens are hitting better than .300 on the campaign, as Cam Redding is batting .354 and Corrigan Bartlett is hitting at a .308 clip.
Saint Louis and St. John's will meet for the first time in the history of the two programs when they square off on Friday night.
