St. John’s Begins BIG EAST Play, Hosts Butler on Saturday

St. John’s looks to improve to 10-5 on the season with a win over the Bulldogs
QUEENS, N.Y. – On Saturday, the St. John's men's tennis team will play its first BIG EAST match of the season as the Johnnies host the Butler Bulldogs at the USTA National Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
Coach Dillon Pottish's squad enters Saturday's contest riding a three-match winning streak. Last weekend, the Red Storm defeated Bryant and Yale within a span of 24 hours, improving its record to 9-5 on the season.
On Saturday against Bryant, the Johnnies and the Bulldogs traded the first two wins in doubles play. The duo of Ognjen Trejgut and Aditya Vashistha clinched the doubles point for the Johnnies, winning the No. 3 match over Grant Pertile and Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia, 6-3.
Dusan Vukicevic dominated the No. 5 singles match as he outlasted Bryant's Michael Plutt (6-1, 6-3), giving the Johnnies a 3-0 lead. Trejgut also won his singles match in dominant fashion over Trent Massam, 6-2, 6-1, giving the Johnnies their fourth and final point to complete the sweep over Bryant.
On Sunday against Yale, the Bulldogs scored their only point of the contest after winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles contests.
In singles play, the Red Storm came to life and took over the match against the Bulldogs. The Johnnies scored their first point of the match with a (6-3, 6-3) victory in the No. 6 match by Trejgut over Yale's Alan Sou.
Vashistha followed suit by topping Cody Lin, 6-2,6-4, in the No. 3 march to secure the Red Storm's third-consecutive point. Andrei Crapcenco clinched the match for the Johnnies, defeating Yale's Dylan King in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, on the No. 1 court.
Saturday's match with the Butler Bulldogs will be the first-ever matchups between the two teams. Butler's Mason Dragos and Ben Shabat are a combined 10-2 in their last four matches.
After Saturday's contest, the Red Storm will face the Wagner Seahawks at the USTA National Tennis Center on Monday April 1, at 8:30 p.m.
