St. John’s Falls to Seton Hall, 4-1

The Johnnies lose their first BIG EAST match of the season
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – In its lone match of the weekend, the St. John's women's tennis team suffered its first BIG EAST loss of the season to Seton Hall on Saturday, 4-1.
In doubles action, the Pirates gained the first point of the afternoon, clinching victories on the No.2 and No. 3 courts. Seton Hall won the first doubles contest on the No. 3 court as Michal Matson and Melody Taal defeated Gabriela Tenorio and Delia Arranz, 6-2. Seton Hall's Thandy Kangwa and Minja Gligic defeated Oceane Garibal and Olaya Inclan Solis in the No. 2 match to gain the first point, 6-4.
The Pirates won singles contests at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 positions to secure a victory over the Johnnies.
After Najah Dawson dropped her No. 2 bout to Regina Pitts, (6-2, 6-2), junior Jessica Livianu gained the Red Storm's lone point of the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Anicka Fajnorova.
The remaining four singles matches were forced to go the distance with St. John's needing three victories in order to seal the win. Garibal valiantly forced a third set, winning the second set, 7-6, after dropping the opening frame, 7-5. In the final set, Garibal was outlasted by Seton Hall's Melody Taal, 2-6.
Despite Inclan Solis and Tenorio holding a third set lead in their singles contests, Minja Gilgic clinched the match for the Pirates, outdueling Arranz, 6-2, 3-6, 3-6.
St. John's returns to action next Friday, April 5, as they travel to Milwaukee to battle BIG EAST rival, Marquette at 4 p.m.
