St. John’s Kicks Off Outdoor Season at the Coastal Carolina Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 7, 2019) – The St. John's track & field team will open the 2019 outdoor season at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, held at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium, starting on Friday, March 8.
Hosted by Coastal Carolina, the invitational will run Friday through Saturday and will be streamed live on www.MyrtleBeachSpringTraining.org, beginning at 10 a.m., with the javelin throw.
The two-day meet will feature 18 programs, including BIG EAST rival Seton Hall. St. John's Head Coach Jim Hurt and his staff will send 21 participants to compete across 18 events in Myrtle Beach.
St. John's concluded its indoor season with a trio of top-10 finishes for the second-straight season. The Johnnies finished in second at the Metropolitan Championships, fourth at the BIG EAST Championships and at ninth at the IC4A/ECAC Championships. The team also brought home 21 medals over its three championship meets.
The Red Storm is coming off of a three-medal performance at the IC4A/ECAC Championships to close out the 2019 indoor campaign. Junior Destiny Davis captured her first ECAC gold medal in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.17 seconds. This came one day after the Mobile, Ala., native set a new personal record at 24.14 seconds to pace the competition in the preliminaries. She will participate in 200-meter, as well as the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay.
Getting her first look at the outdoor track & field competition is freshman Ja'Tae Joyner. The Bowie, Md., native is set to compete in a team-high five events at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. She will join Davis in all three disciplines and will try to leap her way to the podium in the triple jump and high jump. Joyner had great success in her first indoor campaign, concluding the season with a triple jump gold medal at the METS and two silver medals at the conference championships in the long jump and triple jump.
Amarys Berry and Jennifer Odoemene will lead the charge for the Red Storm in the throwing portions. The junior/senior tandem is scheduled to compete in the discus and hammer throws while Berry will also toss the shot put. Joining Berry and Odoemene in throws will be Bernadette McGowan, Samantha Morillo, and Ashley Walsh.
Sophomore standout Leah Anderson heads into the outdoor season after as winning seven championship medals and two BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week honors in the indoor campaign. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native is scheduled for the 400-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay in Myrtle Beach.
Five mid-distance runners are expected to race in three events this weekend. Theresa Gallagher, Stephanie Gerland, Jackie Gallagher, Nicole McCarthy and Shannon Page will compete in the 1500-meter run. Page is the only one scheduled to run in the 800-meter while the remaining four hit the track for the 3000-meter run.
