Johnnies improve to 10-1 in their last 11 games
Ian Murphy recorded the first win of his collegiate career, tossing three no-hit innings while allowing just one Peacock to reach base on balls. The freshman tied a career high with five strikeouts. Fellow rookie Matt Semon struck out three in two innings of one-hit work.
Joe Kelly recorded his second save in the team's last three games after entering with the game-tying run on deck and one out in the ninth.
Ryan Hogan and Mitchell Henshaw combined for four of the team's six hits on the afternoon. Hogan went 2-for-4 with two RBIS and a run scored while Henshaw tallied knocks in two of his three at-bats while scoring twice, walking, and driving in a run.
Wyatt Mascarella logged a hit and an RBI for St. John's, as did Sean McGeehan.
The two squads went scoreless over the first couple of frames before Saint Peter's struck first in the top of the third, scoring twice to take an early 2-0 over the Johnnies.
The Red Storm responded with a single run in the home half despite not recording a hit, as an error and two walks loaded the bases for McGeehan, who lifted a sac fly into left and brought the Johnnies within one.
Following a scoreless fourth frame from both sides, the Johnnies jumped ahead in the bottom of the fifth. Carson Bartels walked and stole second to lead off the inning before scoring on a Mascarella single to center. After a double play, Ryan Markey was hit by a pitch before scoring on a Henshaw double to put the Red Storm ahead 3-2. Hogan then promptly brought home Henshaw with another base knock.
The Red Storm tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Hogan ripped his second RBI single of the afternoon before a throwing error by the Saint Peter's second baseman allowed two more runs to cross the plate, putting St. John's ahead 7-2 after seven.
Saint Peter's threatened with three runs in the ninth to make it 7-5, but Kelly shut the door for his second save of the season.
St. John's will return to action at Jack Kaiser Stadium tomorrow afternoon when it welcomes Columbia. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN3.
