Red Storm picks up first win over Lions since 2010
The Red Storm (14-10) has now won 11 of its last 12 outings heading into the first weekend of BIG EAST play at Butler beginning on Friday afternoon.
Ryan Markey, one of three Johnnies with a trio of hits on the afternoon, went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. Rudy Aguilar drove in three runs with his 3-for-5 outing, doubling twice and scoring on a pair of occasions as well. Carson Bartels rounded out the Red Storm's three-hit cohort, going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Wyatt Mascarella went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Ryan Hogan also recorded a pair of hits, going 2-for-6 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Sean McGeehan and Mitchell Henshaw saw their lone hits of the day leave the yard, as both juniors blasted round trippers over the center field fence. Henshaw drove in four runs while McGeehan brought home a pair. Both players scored three times on the afternoon.
Mike Antico went 1-for-3 with a walk and drove in three runs for St. John's. Peter Abinanti and Colin Wetterau also recorded single RBIs for the Johnnies.
Ben Greenberg picked up his first win as a member of the Red Storm, improving to 1-1 on the year with a scoreless inning of work in the second.
St. John's struck first in the bottom of the second, as Markey singled to set the table for a McGeehan two-run shot off the batter's eye in center, putting the Red Storm ahead 2-0 after two.
After Columbia (8-13) left the bases loaded in the top of the third, St. John's exploded for eight runs in the home half of the frame. Mascarella and Markey ripped RBI hits before Henshaw rocketed a three-run homer over the center field fence. The Johnnies were not done yet, as Aguilar brought home a run with an RBI ground-rule double to right center before Antico laced a two-run single up the middle to make it 10-0 after three.
The Lions responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth before the Red Storm ripped off its most productive frame of the season. 13 batters came to the plate in a 10-run inning that featured six hits for the Johnnies. The Red Storm had last scored 10 times in a frame in 2018 at Xavier during a 34-7 St. John's win.
Henshaw, Hogan, Abinanti, Antico and Mascarella all recorded single RBIs in the fourth while Aguilar brought home a pair with a double to right center. The final three runs of the inning crossed the plate when the Columbia left fielder saw a Hogan batted ball glance off his glove with the bases loaded, allowing all three runners to score.
Columbia brought home three runs in the top of the seventh, but St. John's answered with two more in the home half. Bartels smacked an RBI double to score Josh Greene, who had doubled, before coming home on a Wetterau sac fly later in the frame.
The Lions tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth, but they were far from enough, as St. John's closed out its 22-7 victory.
The Red Storm returns to action this weekend, traveling to Indianapolis for the team's BIG EAST opening series at Butler starting on Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on BIG EAST Digital Network.
