The Red Storm is riding a two-game winning streak heading into Wednesday’s contest
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 2, 2019) – The St. John's softball team will look to extend its winning streak to three when the Johnnies take on NEC foe LIU Brooklyn at 4 p.m. at LIU Field on April 3.
Live stats will be available at LIUAthletics.com. Wednesday's contest will also be broadcasted on NECFrontRow.com.
The Red Storm swept Georgetown this past weekend in a rain-shortened series, defeating the Hoyas, 12-4, and, 10-2, in Saturday's doubleheader. Both contests ended by run rule in the sixth inning.
After two multi-hit games and a walk-off single versus Georgetown, Laura Delgado was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll on Monday. The junior finished the weekend batting .625 with five hits, three runs scored and her third walk-off of March.
Peyton Cody is riding a team-high and career-best 10-game hitting streak into Wednesday's matchup. Through 28 appearances, the rookie sensation has five hits in seven tries with the bases loaded while knocking in 13 runs.
Junior Kaitlin Mattera also holds the longest streak of the season by reaching base safely in 13-straight contests. Furthermore, the Coventry, R.I., native was walked a program-record four times against the Hoyas.
Much like St. John's, LIU Brooklyn also enters Wednesday's contest with a two-game winning streak and sits atop of their respective conference. The Blackbirds (17-12) have not played a conference opponent yet this season after this past weekend's doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson was rained out.
Senior Schae Dickson paces the Blackbirds with a .319 batting average, 19 runs scored and 19 RBIs. Freshman Elena Valenzuela leads all Blackbirds' starters and the NEC with nine wins and two saves. LIU Brooklyn's rookie has posted a 1.98 ERA and 41 strikeouts through 92.0 innings of work.
The Johnnies have won 20 games against LIU Brooklyn since the teams' first meeting in 1986. St. John's has posted wins in five of its last six contests versus the Blackbirds. Over that span, the Red Storm has outscored its NEC rival, 44-24, including a 9-5 victory last season.
In the 2018 tilt, Gretchen Bowie lifted the Johnnies to their victory with a career-high performance, posting four hits, two home runs and five RBIs against the Blackbirds. The Blackbirds' sophomore Kiana Cisneros had a perfect day at the plate in last season's matchup, recording three hits and scoring one run.
