Freshman Peyton Cody hits first career grand slam in the third inning
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 3, 2019) – The St. John's softball team dropped its midweek matchup to LIU Brooklyn, 6-5, at LIU Field on Wednesday.
Freshman Peyton Cody continued to shine with the bases loaded, smacking her first career grand slam in the second inning. She is the first player to hit one since teammate Gretchen Bowie did against the same Blackbirds last season. On Cody's her lone hit of the afternoon, the Mission Viejo, Calif., native improved her batting average to .750 with 17 RBIs with the bases loaded. Additionally, the freshman extended her hitting streak to 11 on her dinger.
The top four batters of the Red Storm's lineup, Kaitlyn Lologo, Bowie, Marissa Rizzi and Cody went a combined 6-for-13 with five of the team's six runs scored.
St. John's (15-16, 4-1 BIG EAST) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off the bat of Bowie, smacking her fifth home run of the season. In two career contests against LIU Brooklyn, the Johnnies' third baseman has recorded three home runs and six RBIs. The Sparta, N.J., native finished the day batting 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Blackbirds (18-12, 0-0 NEC) responded in the home half of the first with an RBI double to tie the game, followed by a two-run single up the middle to take a 3-1 lead.
After LIU Brooklyn pushed its advantage to three, 4-1, in the bottom of the second inning, the Red Storm reclaimed the lead in the third on Cody's grand slam, 5-4.
Following a scoreless fourth frame, the Blackbirds crossed the plate twice in the fifth to take their second lead of the game, 6-5.
St. John's threatened with runners in scoring position in the final two innings. The Johnnies loaded the bases in the sixth inning when Laura Delgado, Lologo and Bowie all singled with one out before putting runners on first and second in the final frame.
The Red Storm heads to Omaha for a three-game tilt with Creighton, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6 at noon.
