Red Storm will look to get back in the win column beginning on Tuesday
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 29, 2019) – After dropping three games to Georgetown this past weekend in the nation's capital, the St. John's baseball team will look to rebound beginning with a pair of midweek games. The Red Storm will play host to Iona on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Teaneck, N.J., for a 3 p.m. contest with Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday.
Tuesday's contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and will also serve as the team's annual Pack The Jack game. A number of food trucks will be parked just outside the stadium and fans will have the opportunity to win plenty of prizes and receive giveaways throughout the game.
The Red Storm (23-17, 5-7 BIG EAST) enters midweek action after falling victim to its first BIG EAST sweep in more than a half a decade. Prior to dropping three straight to Georgetown, the Red Storm had not been swept by a league foe since 2013 at Pittsburgh. The Johnnies had not been swept in a three-game series by a current member of the BIG EAST since before the conference officially began sponsoring baseball in 1985.
Despite failing to register one in the win column, the Red Storm's pitching staff performed exceptionally well, limiting Georgetown to just 10 total runs, only six of which were earned, in three games. Of the 10 St. John's pitchers that were used, none surrendered more than two earned runs while five, all relievers, turned in at least one inning of scoreless work. The staff struck out 31 Georgetown batters while surrendering just 12 walks on the weekend. Gavin Hollowell, who tossed four frames in Sunday's series finale, struck out a career-high eight batters. Matt Semon, Wednesday's scheduled starter against FDU, struck out the side in his lone inning of work on Friday, matching a season-high for punch-outs in a single game. Joe Kelly and Turner French combined to throw four scoreless innings of one-hit relief with five strikeouts in Friday's series opener.
The Red Storm struggled at the plate this past weekend, striking out 40 times in 96 at-bats. Last season, the Johnnies struck out 39 times in their first six conference games, all wins. The Red Storm hit just .198 as a team at Shirley Povich Field. After going 0-for-4 in Friday's series opener, Mike Antico closed out the weekend by going 4-for-7 with three doubles in his final two games, including a 3-for-5, two-double effort in Sunday's series finale.
The Johnnies will look to remain undefeated at home in non-conference play when they welcome Iona on Tuesday. The Red Storm is 12-0 in non-league games at The Jack this season, hitting .314 as a team and outscoring the opposition by an average margin of 8.5 to 3.4 in those outings. All nine of the Red Storm's everyday starters are hitting .294 or better in non-conference games in Queens.
The Red Storm will face off against both Iona (11-31) and FDU (11-30-1) for the second time season. The Johnnies topped the Gaels, 7-1, in their first game in the Northeast on March 13. Two weeks ago, the Red Storm downed the Knights, 11-4, at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Ryan Markey went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the way for St. John's in that affair.
Iona is coming off an 0-4 week, losing to Rutgers on Wednesday before being swept at Siena. FDU took three of four from Saint Peter's this past weekend after being swept in the midweek by Fordham and Albany.
St. John's has long-running series histories with both Iona and FDU. The Johnnies hold a 55-11 advantage over the Gaels and carry a 48-7-1 all-time edge over the Knights. The Red Storm has won nine straight decisions against Iona dating back to 2014 and has claimed victory in 27 consecutive outings against FDU since 1990.
