Nick Mondak earns the win, fanning 10 Iona hitters in six innings of scoreless work
QUEENS, N.Y. – Behind a career performance from starting pitcher Nick Mondak, the St. John's baseball team returned to its winning ways on Tuesday, topping Iona, 6-1, at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Mondak, who made just his seventh career appearance against the Gaels, put forth the best effort by a St. John's starting pitcher this season to record his first win. He became the first Red Storm hurler to reach double-digit strikeouts in 2019, fanning 10 and allowing only two hits in six innings of scoreless work.
Carson Bartels and Ryan Hogan registered two hits apiece for the Johnnies. Hogan lifted his second career round tripper, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the fourth.
Ryan Markey, Sean McGeehan, Brandon Bossard and Josh Greene also drove in runs for the Red Storm (24-17). Mike Antico singled and scored once.
St. John's opened the scoring in the home half of the first, as Antico singled through the right side before eventually coming around to score on a Markey base knock to center later in the frame.
The Red Storm added onto its lead a few innings later in the fourth, as Hogan launched a two-run shot to left, putting the Johnnies ahead 3-0 heading into the fifth.
St. John's quickly added on two more in the home half of the sixth, as McGeehan and Hogan singled to set up a Bossard RBI knock and a sac fly from Greene, pushing the Johnnies' edge to five runs after six.
Bartels doubled to lead off the seventh before coming around to score on a McGeehan squeeze, bumping the Red Storm lead to six heading into the eighth.
Iona finally got on the board with an unearned run in the eighth, but Turner French faced just three batters to close out the ninth and seal the St. John's victory.
