Red Storm and Bluejays will wrap three-game set tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. ET
OMAHA, Neb. (May 11, 2011) – Led by a career effort from senior Wyatt Mascarella, the St. John's baseball team jumped out to a five-run lead before holding off Creighton, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.

Originally scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, the two teams will now attempt to close their series on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Mascarella, who had collected just four hits in the 15 games leading up to Saturday's breakout performance, went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs. His four hits and four RBIs both matched career highs.

Mike Antico reached base four times in a 1-for-2, two-RBI effort, walking three times and belting a two-run double in the sixth.

St. John's (27-20) picked up a critical BIG EAST win to move to 6-8 in league play. Creighton (30-11, 10-4 BIG EAST) fell to second place in the conference standings with its loss and a Xavier victory over Villanova.

Jeff Belge picked up the win for the Red Storm, improving to 4-5 with five innings of two-hit, one-run work. The 6-foot-5 southpaw struck out seven and surrendered six walks on the afternoon. Gavin Hollowell closed the door with three frame of one-run work, fanning six en route to his sixth save of the season.

St. John's threatened in the top of the first, as Antico drew a one-out walk before Mascarella went the other way for a double, giving the Red Storm runners on second and third with one down. The Johnnies were unable to bring anything home; however, as the two teams remained scoreless after a half an inning.

Two innings later, the Red Storm put the game's first runs on the board. Antico logged another one-out walk before Mascrellla left the yard, sending a ball into the left field stands and giving the Johnnies a 2-0 edge.

Creighton drew three walks and recorded its first hit of the day in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bluejays managed to push across just one run and trim the Red Storm advantage to one, 2-1.

The Johnnies broke the game open in the top of the sixth, as Antico and Mascarella both recorded two-run doubles to make it 6-1 in favor St. John's after five and a half innings. Mitchell Henshaw singled before Rudy Aguilar and Carson Bartels were hit on consecutive pitches to load the bases for Antico. Antico's two-bagger scored Henshaw and Aguilar before Mascarella promptly brought home Antico and Bartels in the following at-bat.

Creighton answered with two runs of its own in the home half of the frame, cutting the St. John's lead to three, 6-3, before adding another tally in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-4.

Creighton left six batters on base between the sixth and eighth innings, stranding two in the sixth and one in the seventh before leaving the bags full in the eighth.
