Getulio Echeandia Jr. Breaks 400m Hurdles World Record

The former Johnnie set the new mark at 57.73 in the 55-59 age group
QUEENS, N.Y. (July 18, 2019) – After racing at the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships, former St. John's standout Getulio Echeandia Jr., set the world record in the 400-meter hurdles in the 55-59 age group at the Bill and Karen Bergan Track in the Cyclone Sports Complex on the campus of Iowa State University on July 13.
The Miami, Fla., native raced around the track in 57.73 seconds for the Southwest Sprinters Track Club to down the previous mark of 58.92 set by Guido Müeller in 1995. Echeandia Jr., also took home gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.85 and in the 4x400-meter relay, crossing as a group at 3:32.86.
During his time in Queens, Echeandia Jr., helped St. John's upset Rutgers, 131-125, for the 1985 men's Metropolitan Championship after taking gold in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.77.
Former Johnnies Maya Stephens, Eboni Birch and Erica Graham also competed this past weekend at the 2019 Adam Sanford Invitational held at Icahn Stadium, joining current Red Storm student-athletes Leah Anderson, Brianna Burkley, Kayla Parker, Samantha Morillo and Ashley Walsh.
Stephens, who is expected to race at the Canadian Track & Field Championships on July 25-28, took first place in her 400-meter dash invitational tune-up with a winning mark of 52.74 seconds. Rising junior Anderson followed right behind her former teammate in second, crossing the line at 53.52.
Anderson also picked up another second place finish in the 200-meter sprint with a time of 23.87. Burkley and Parker joined the reigning BIG EAST Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in the 200-meter, finishing seventh and 11th at 26.62 and 27.29, respectively. The duo also ran the 400-meter dash open with Burkley posting a third-best time at 59.62 and Parker finishing sixth at 1:02.37.
Birch captured the top spot in the javelin with a distance of 35.27 meters, doubling the second place mark of 17.10 meters. The 2019 graduate also participated in the shot put alongside Morillo and Walsh. The trio swept the podium with Morillo taking the top spot with a 12.20-meter throw, followed by Birch at 11.88 meters. Walsh rounded out the top three with a throw of 11.25 meters.
Morillo and Walsh also participated in the discus, placing third and fourth with 41.51-meter and 34.22-meter throws, respectively. Walsh landed a spot on the hammer throw podium, finishing third at 43.63 meters.
Former Red Storm jumper Graham also competed in Randall's Island, posting a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.72 meters.
Current Johnnies Amarys Berry and Nina D'Amato also threw in the Tri-State area this past weekend, picking up podium finishes in their respective events. Berry continued her winning ways with a 13.41-meter throw at the New Jersey Strider Summer Series on Saturday. D'Amato claimed the final spot on the podium at the Nutmeg State Games in Connecticut with a javelin throw of 34.14 meters.
