Lipkens grabs a career-high 11 saves against the Seawolves
The St. John's women's soccer team battled Stony Brook for more than 90 minutes on Thursday night before falling in overtime, 1-0, to the Seawolves at LaValle Stadium.
The Johnnies have now reached overtime in three of their five matches so far this season.
Despite the loss, goalkeeper Naya Lipkens put forth a valiant effort against the potent Seawolves' offense, turning aside a career-high 11 shots. This marked the first such effort by a St. John's player since Lauren Ferris grabbed 11 at Seton Hall on Oct. 2, 2011.
On the game, Stony Brook (4-1-0) outshot the Red Storm (1-4-0) by a 20-3 margin and recorded 11 corner kicks to the Johnnies' seven.
Zsani Kajan, Addison Hornsey, Sofia Ambrosio all tallied a shot on the night for the Red Storm. Kajan fired one toward the cage in the 16th minute but was denied by the Seawolves' keeper. Ambrosio and Hornsey both saw their attempts blocked by Stony Brook's backline.
Stony Brook controlled the possession game over the first 45 minutes, but the Seawolves were unable to convert on any chances as Lipkens came up big for the Johnnies with four saves in the opening half.
Kajan recorded the Johnnies' lone look on goal in the 16th minute, firing one towards the center of the cage, but she was turned away by the Seawolves' keeper.
At the intermission, Stony Brook held a 7-1 edge in shots, four of which were on net.
In the 67th minute, the home team appeared to have snapped the scoreless tie but the play was whistled offside to keep Stony Brook off the board.
The Seawolves continued to apply offensive pressure over the remainder of the match. All of their chances, however, were turned aside by the St. John's defensive unit, sending both programs into overtime.
The Seawolves broke through in the 93rd minute with a golden goal from Alyssa Francese to seal their victory over the Red Storm.
The Johnnies will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they welcome La Salle to Belson Stadium. First kick is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
