The Johnnies and the Friars will showdown on BEDN Friday at 11 a.m.
Following three-straight setbacks, the St. John's women's basketball team will look to get back to its winning ways on Friday when the team welcomes Providence for an 11 a.m. meeting at Carnesecca Arena.
The matchup between the Johnnies (10-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) and the Friars (9-8, 0-5 BIG EAST) will be available to live stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Sky Lindsay and Pat O'Keefe on the call from Queens.
The Johnnies will look to snap a three-game skid when the team returns to Queens where it has won six of seven games this season. The Red Storm's 6-1 record at home marks the program's best start to the season inside the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena since the 2015-16 campaign. That season, the Johnnies jumped out to a 9-1 start at home before eventually going on to win the conference crown for the first time since 1988.
In games played at home this year, the Johnnies are averaging 77.1 points per game and are outscoring their opponents by a +14.4 margin. In addition to the explosive offense on their home hardwood, the Johnnies are also averaging 10.9 steals per game at Carnesecca Arena.
Through the team's seven contests at home, Qadashah Hoppie is pacing the way for the squad with 18.1 points per outing. Hoppie has been consistent for the Red Storm all year as she is averaging a team-high 17.3 points per game to sit fifth overall in the conference. The Staten Island, native has finished in double-figures in all but one game and has drained 20-plus points on seven different occasions. With 294 points this year, Hoppie has bumped her career total up to 995 and is just five points shy of reaching 1,000 for her career.
Hoppie is not the only Red Storm player who has the opportunity to eclipse her 1,000th point on Friday, as senior guard Alisha Kebbe is just three points short of the century mark. Earlier this season, Kebbe grabbed the 500th rebound of her Red Storm career. With 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, Kebbe will become the 11th Johnnie in program history to reach both milestones.
Friday will mark the 71st all-time meeting between St. John's and Providence, with the Johnnies holding a 41-29 edge. The two teams split the series a season ago, with the Red Storm snapping a three-game losing streak against the Friars on Feb. 10. St. John's and Providence have played one another 33 times at Carnesecca Arena with the Red Storm boasting an 18-15 advantage on its home court.
Providence enters Friday's contest with a 9-8 record after dropping five straight to open up conference action. The Friars sit atop the BIG EAST and are ranked 12th nationally in three-point field goal percentage, draining 38.2 percent of their shots from distance. Head Coach Jim Crowley's team holds the second-best mark in conference action for scoring defense, limiting its opponents just 59.0 points per game and allowing them to hit just 36.1 percent of their shots from the floor.
Providence is led by Mary Baskerville in both scoring and rebounding with 13.9 points and 8.1 boards per contest. Three-point specialist Kaela Webb is averaging 11.4 points per game, to rank second on the team in scoring.
Following Friday's meeting with Providence, the Johnnies will welcome -/RV Creighton to Carnesecca Arena on Sunday for a 2 p.m. showdown.
