Former head coach of the St. John’s track & field and cross country teams passed away at the age of 85
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2020) – St. John's Track & Field, the athletic department and the entire Red Storm community mourn the loss of Steve Bartold, who passed away at the age of 85.
"We are sad to learn of the passing of Coach Bartold, who is in the St. John's Hall of Fame for being a great runner and a legendary coach," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "Steve had a profound influence on thousands of track & field athletes over the past 60 years at St. John's, as a head coach at Yale and then as the IC4A Administrator. His booming voice could be heard above the crowd and one listened when hearing it. We send our condolences to Nancy, his entire family and to all of those that he touched in our sport."
Bartold graduated from St. John's in 1957, holding school records in the 440-meter dash and the 440-yard sprint medley. He was a member of the Red Storm's winning sprint medley relay team at the Penn Relays during his senior season.
A 1991 inductee into the St. John's Athletic Hall of Fame, Bartold succeeded William Ward as the head coach of the Red Storm track & field and cross country programs. He led St. John's to the Metropolitan Cross Country Championship in 1961 and 1965 before guiding the Johnnies to a No. 13 national ranking in 1986. Bartold went on to help the Red Storm capture a pair of indoor and outdoor Metropolitan track titles while producing 16 NCAA Division I All-Americans. He also became a mentor to two-time Olympian and St. John's all-time great, Tom Farrell.
Following his 19-year coaching tenure at St. John's, Bartold served as the Head Coach of the track & field and cross country programs at Yale University and as the ECAC/IC4A Administrator for nearly two decades.
