St. John’s Awaits East Carolina and Dartmouth This Weekend

The Johnnies look to improve to 9-1 with wins on Friday and Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2020) – After splitting a pair of matches against No. 25 Arizona and Cal Poly in Tucson, Ariz., last weekend, the St. John's men's tennis team returns to the Big Apple to host East Carolina at the USTA National Tennis Center at noon ET on Friday, before traveling to Hanover, N.H., on Saturday to square off with Dartmouth at 3 p.m. ET.
The Johnnies enter Friday's bout with a 7-1 overall record after suffering a 5-2 loss to No. 25 Arizona and earning a 4-3 victory over Cal Poly in their previous two contests last weekend.
Aditya Vashistha, this week's BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week and No. 40 player in the Oracle/ITA Rankings, is coming off a phenomenal road trip as he finished with a perfect 2-0 singles record in the No. 1 slot. Against No. 25 Arizona, the junior defeated his second ranked opponent of the season, toppling No. 36 Filip Malbasic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. On Saturday, the Bikaner, India, native secured his second singles win in 2020, bouncing Cal Poly's Antoine Noel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Last week's BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week Udayan Bhakar has continued to solidify his position as the Red Storm's No. 2 singles player. Despite suffering his first singles loss of the season in straight sets to No. 25 Arizona's No. 61 Jonas Ziverts, the sophomore responded with a crucial three-set triumph over Cal Poly's Fernando Fonseca to clinch the 4-3 win for the Johnnies.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish's team has been dominant in singles play throughout the 2020 campaign, boasting a 31-9 record in its first eight contests. Bhakar, Giuseppe De Camelis, and Ignacio Garcia have provided a huge boost behind Vashistha, accounting for 17 of the Red Storm's 31 singles victories so far this season.

The Pirates are led by Diogo Marquez who has a 3-1 record in the No. 1 singles slot. The sophomore lost his first match of the season against the Midshipmen, but bounced back to win a three-set thriller against Winthrop last weekend. Javier Renones has sealed three of his four singles victories on the No. 2 court.

The Big Green has commenced the 2020 campaign with six victories in a row, knocking off SEC giants Alabama and LSU in the process. Dartmouth captured two 6-1 wins over Boston University and Bryant at the Boss Tennis Center last Saturday. The Big Green secured wins in four of its six doubles and 10 of its 12 singles bouts in its doubleheader sweep over both Boston University and Bryant.
After its two tilts with East Carolina and Dartmouth this weekend, St. John's will continue its seven-match road swing in New England. The Johnnies will start the weekend with a match against Boston University on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. ET, followed by a meeting with Bryant on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET.
