The Red Storm captured its second-consecutive 4-3 victory to improve to 8-1 on the year
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2020) – After capping last weekend's road trip with a crucial 4-3 victory over Cal Poly, the St. John's men's tennis team improved to 8-1 on the year as the Johnnies knocked off undefeated East Carolina on Friday, 4-3, in its first of two matches against unbeaten programs this weekend.
The Red Storm claimed the lone doubles point of the afternoon by taking the first two matches on the No. 2 and 3 courts. Louis-nils Michel and Djuro Opacic bounced East Carolina's Wisse Jonker and Javier Renones, 6-4, in the No. 2 slot. The Red Storm gained the doubles point when Aditya Vashistha and Udayan Bhakar sealed a 6-4 victory over Diogo Marques and Federico Masetti in the No. 3 tilt.
In singles play, No. 40 Vashistha continued his impressive form with his third-consecutive triumph in the top bout, toppling Diogo Marques in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. Garcia also took care of his opponent in straight sets, knocking off East Carolina's Javier Renones in the No. 3 slot, 6-3, 6-2.
The Pirates rattled a couple of singles wins to put up a fight as they claimed the victory on the No. 4-6 matches. East Carolina clinched its first and second points of the contest when Opacic and Giuseppe De Camelis dropped their bouts in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, and 6-3, 7-5, respectively.
The last two points of the contests needed three sets to distinguish a winner. East Carolina tied the match at three points apiece when St. John's newcomer Evan Felcher dropped his No. 6 tilt to Federico Masetti, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1. The Johnnies sealed the victory on the No. 2 court as Bhakar, last week's BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week, earned the team's fourth point with a dramatic 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Simon Labbe.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad will square off with its second undefeated program of the weekend in Dartmouth on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. ET in Hanover, N.H.
