St. John’s Drops Season Opener, 10-1, to Kennesaw State

Nick Mondak allows no earned runs and strikes out seven in 5.0 innings of work
KENNESAW, Ga. (Feb. 14, 2020) – The Red Storm received a solid start from Nick Mondak, but Kennesaw State scored eight runs after his exit in a 10-1 victory to start the season on Friday at Stillwell Stadium.
Mondak dazzled in his first outing of 2020, scattering four hits, fanning seven, walking one and surrendering no earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. The senior from Watertown, Conn., threw 91 pitches, 60 of which were strikes.
Mike Antico and Brandon Miller logged two singles apiece for the Red Storm. Carson Bartels and Sean McGeehan also added base knocks.
After Mondak set down the first six Kennesaw State batters of the game, including four by way of the K, the Johnnies were undone by defense in the top of the third. The Red Storm committed two errors, leading to two unearned runs and giving the Owls a 2-0 lead after three.
The Red Storm pushed its lone run across in the top of the sixth, as Antico led off the frame with a single to left before swiping second on the first pitch of the next at-bat. He then moved to third on a Ryan Markey fly ball to right before scoring on a Justin Folz grounder to short.
With the Red Storm's deficit down to one, the Owls hung up a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an Alex Carballo three-run shot to right.
After the Red Storm left two runners on base in the top of the seventh, Kennesaw State scored three runs in the home half before adding two more the following inning to seal the victory.
The Red Storm will resume the Atlanta Challenge tomorrow afternoon at Georgia State. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
