BOSTON, Mass. (Feb. 14, 2020) – The St. John's track & field team captured four podium spots and two first-place finishes at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday inside the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
Leah Anderson broke the program record for the 200 meters after finishing in first place with a time of 23.54. Anderson outran the mark of 23.80 that was set by Adriana Wright in 2017. The junior sprinter also set a school record in the 400 meters after registering a time of 53.25, good enough for second place overall. The mark also ranks 15th in the nation.
Anderson teamed up with Avon Samuels, Skyy Diop and Brianna Burkley to take first place in the 4x400-meter relay for the third straight week with a mark of 3:38.74. Anderson took the fastest split with a time of 53.142 while Diop clocked in at 54.799. The Johnnies' mark ranks 30th in the nation and first in the BIG EAST.
"We had a spectacular meet with Leah leading the way in the 200, 400 and 4x400," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "Our throwers also had a great day. It's a great way to go into the BIG EAST Championships in two weeks. It was a dominating performance at one of the top meets in the country."
Senior thrower Amarys Berry took second place in the shot put finals with a distance of 14.11 meters while teammates Najeaya Singleton and Samantha Morillo placed ninth and tenth, respectively.
Junior sprinter Onassha Rogers earned a first-place finish in her heat for the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.77.
Freshman distance runner Claire Cushing also won her heat in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:18.19 while Chantai Smith finished close behind in second with a time of 2:18.24.
The Red Storm returns to action when the team heads to the BIG EAST Championships in Geneva, Ohio on March 1.
